The short note below regarding the origins of the MUMFORD name are very
basic, and more detailed accounts can be found on the internet elsewhere.
The English surname MUMFORD is local in origin, being one of those names derived from the
place where a man once lived or held land. In this case it is derived from the French
place-name Montfort-sur-Risle, in which case it would have been brought to England by the
Normans after the conquest of 1066, or from the English place-name Mundford in Norfolk.
Hugo de Montford (de Montfort) who appears in the Domesday Book of 1066 came from
Montfort-sur-Risle while others later may have come from some other French Montfort.
However, many of the early forms are indistinguishable from those of Mundford (Norfolk) so that
it is difficult to ascertain the exact place of origin of the name. Ralph de Muntford appears in the
Pipe Rolls for Gloucestershire in 1200 and Richard de Mundeford in the Feet of Fines for
Cambridge in 1247.
The surname MUMFORD was established in the United States at an early date. Records show
that one Henry Mumford sailed to New England in 1671. A notable bearer of the name is
Lewis
Mumford, the twentieth century American author and social critic who has written on such
diverse topics as education, politics, religion, and philosophy.
